Yes, while The Age of Steel is a fantastic ep, Rise of the Cybermen was so much better paced.
It was the anticipation of the appearence of the Cybermen that made the first episode so much more exciting.
And don't worry too much about the departure of Mickey. He may well be around again someday... |

Maybe I've seen too much over the years because I found this episode very average.
Oh yes, it looked great, and the new cybermen were all done very well; (although the robotic marching got a bit boring after a while); and all the SFX were excellent, but the storyline let it all down.
So much that could have been said about government and it's involvement with corporations, our dependance on technology, loss of individual rights, medical technology, the super rich and the poor etc. It could have said quiet a lot, and it didn't.
And I was disappointed that when Rickey was killed it was made so obvious. Why didn't anyone consider having "Rickey" report that "Mickey" had died; and then only at the end after the Doctor and Rose had gone do we find out that it was the other way around. It was just all to standard ..... |

As I mentioned before this story came from elements of Marc Platt's Big Finish story Spare Parts. This comes a year after Dalek was adapted from writer Rob Sherman's own Big Finish story Jubilee. Already people have been speculating whether season 3 will also adapt a Big Finish story in whole or in part as well. A case of wait and see on this.
Pete is revealed to be Gemini. Gemini is of course a sign of the Zodiac. Well coincidentally I just finished reading the Gemini story of the Big Finish short story book anthology Zodiac which told a story based on each sign of the Zodiac. The Gemini story which is called Twin Piques has nothing thing to do with Cybermen. It however does feature the Second Doctor and Jamie who encountered the Cybermen the most with four stories in the classic series. |

Various pros and cons to this story.
Pros
- good storyline, and a thrilling ending - this was, in my opinion, classic Who and I enjoyed the way that Lumic became the Cybercontroller, but apparently wasnt conditioned - justfied in that the Cybermen addressed him as being 'superior'.
- Mickey's coming of age, impressed again with Noel Clarke and happy to see him functioning better than a 'tin dog'
- Character development of the preachers.
- Emotional inhibitors, showing in my opinion, the difference between Mondasians and Parallel Earthlings (Mondasians apparently willing for Conversion, humans forced into it).
Cons
-Back to just Rose and the Doctor....gah
-Resolution to capture at end of ROTC - bit of a easy escape/sonic screwdriver - use the Tardis battery thing to pulverise them. Also a bit of a weird recharge scenario. Expel all that energy and only 4 hrs to rechargs? Even when it takes 24 hours to re-recharge the TARDIS when it's at full capacity? Gimme a break..
-killed off Lumic pretty easily too...although I suppose this could be a good way for the series to revert back to the orginal metal monsters. |

Was there any mention of Torchwood in this ep? Or did I miss it?
Glad to see Mickey gone, now they just need to remove Rose.
Not to bad of an episode all up. |

I know Torchwood was mentioned in the previous episode. Maybe that counts as a mention in the entire story?
I don't recall it being mentioned in Age of Steel. |

Yeah didn't the "President" mention it to Peter Tyler in ROTC?
I guess it counts for both then. |

I don't know if he mentioned it to the Pres, but I do recall Pete spotting a guest at the party, walking off camera and asking how things were going at Torchwood. |

The newsreader on Rose's phone also mentions a report by the Torchwood Institute. So I guess having two Torchwood references in Rise makes up for having none in Age. |

Is there any way that the Earth from ROTC and AOS is going to jump dimensions and become the Mondas in our universe?
Just a thought but I got the feeling during the final seconds of AOS that it would not be the last time we see that Earth (and Mickey). |

Dunno about the new Mondas theory, but I agree with you on the possibility Mickey will be revisiting us before the series is out. I'm anticipating a big ending: bigger than the Parting of Ways, if that's possible. |

yeh... about the mickey thing...
Half of you guys have seen Idiot's Lantern I'm guessing (so you will able to tell me if I'm completely off here... well I'll know by Saturday night anyway)... but I dunno... if there was communication between a parallel world and our Earth.. you think television would be a very good medium for it to be achieved (and would explain all those 'dead people' that are reported ot be seen over static).... in which case "Idiot's" lantern being .. the Idiot????
OK I'm probably completley off track,, but it gives me another reason to watch the damn show on Saturday :p |

Which is a tad odd - is there an alternate Torchwood, or does their influence spread over parallel universes? If the latter, that's mightily impressive.
Overall I thought The Age of Steel and Rise of the Cybermen were great. The second episode seemed a lot faster than the first, but maybe that's because it was full on action. It must be so hard to come up with new ways of doing Cybermen, but overall, even with all the Spare Parts influence, I thought it succeeded in sculpting something new and very enjoyable. And even though Ricky was a bit unconvincing, as Mickey, Noel Clarke was exceptional. I'm actually a lot sadder to see him go than I suspect I will be with Rose (I don't hate Rose, but I prefer Mickey).
There were only two things I didn't like about the episode. The first is a tiny nitpick, and that's the "Who's Lucy?" scene - I'm getting a bit tired of that sort of thing. And the second was the music. It was brilliant during the action scenes and in fact through most of it, but in the end scenes with Mickey and Jake driving the van it practically drowned out the dialogue and absolutely told us that the scene was meant to be poignant. Ironically there was more sad music used with Rose's leaving in The Parting of the Ways, but I felt sadder about Mickey.
Overall, excellent. And I'm eagerly awaiting Mr Gatiss' second contribution to the TV series tonight. |

| If there's an alternate Torchwood there must be an alternate Doctor that saved alternate Queen Victoria. |

Not necessarily. The alternate Cybermen didn't arise on Mondas, Earth's twin planet, so there may have been a different reason why Torchwood was set up in the other universe. In Tooth and Claw, the device in Torchwood (Hall? Manor? whatever) was set up to do a particular task that the Doctor worked out. If, say, Prince Albert had got it sussed out earlier it may still have been the inspiration to use the building as the base for developing ways to deal with threats beyond the ordinary, so the name and function would be the same without the Doctor (ours or an alternate version) being involved.

| There may be a version of the Doctor in the alternative universe, but that doesn't mean he ever left Gallifrey, or if he did, not at the same time that he did in 'our' universe. See the "Unbound" series...."Auld Mortality" and "A Storm of Angels" in particular... |

| And in Inferno, we didn't see an alternate Doctor exiled to Earth. |

Int. Electromatics was just a name in the alternate reality...perhaps Torchwood makes chocolate. |
