I found Warriors to be a bit pants, really. There were so many times it could have been awesome (Part 1's cliffhanger, the Myrka smashing through the doors, Sea Devils running amok inside the base killing everyone), but in the end it just fizzled. Nothing was particularly memorable, save for all the crap bits.
I thought the initial story idea was OK, so I'll give it a 'Fair' rating 'cause it tried. |

I haven't seen Space: 1999 in quite a while but this is what it says in A Brief History of Time (Travel) site on Warriors of the Deep: "Byrne was heavily influenced in the development of the serial by an episode of the science-fiction series Space: 1999 he had script edited, Christopher Penfold's Guardian Of Piri." That was only mention of Space: 1999 on that page.
adriansherlock over at the Gallifrey forum had this to say when I pointed it out over at that forum:
"By the way, Guardian of Piri certainly features the idea of a guy with implants in his brain being able to plug his head into a computer like Maddox, which Warriors develops further, but otherwise, there is no plot resemblance. The 1999 episode The Beta Cloud reminds me of the Myrka attack, as it deals with a rather unconvincing big monster who rampages through Moonbase Alpha beating up guards and whipping ass." |

Playing Nilson, a villain, is Ian McCulloch and his casting on this story has something to do with the fact that he had worked with director Pennant Roberts on Terry Nation's Survivors. Roberts had directed nine episodes of Survivors including the first one and McCulloch played the regular role of Greg Preston.
Interestingly I am currently reading the Fact of Fiction analysis of the story by Alan Barnes in DWM 392 and was reminded that Warriors of the Deep also has a character called Preston but not played by McCulloch.
As director Roberts could easily have switched character names with their character descriptions and had McCulloch play Preston the baddie. However it would probably have been too much for Survivors fans to handle seeing McCulloch playing another character called Preston but is a villain. |

Pants, total pants.
The story is ok, the realization is diabolical. I guess I accept Ian Lavines explanation that even though he was continuity adviser the writers got sick of him saying that they were wrong but how hard is it to just watch the Silurians and not contradict it? The saddest thing is how much better the Silurians looked in the original episode.
The telegraphing of the gas that is lethal to "Marine and reptile" creatures is just terrible. |
