On Wednesday June 27 the ABC will start showing the sci-fi comedy series Hyperdrive:
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/guide/netw/200706/programs/ZY8478A001D27062007T213000.htm

I have been told that the show is like Red Dwarf, if that in any way influence people's decision to watch it.

Found out from IMDb that the cast includes Kevin Eldon who was Antimony in Death Comes To Time.

It's just started screening in NZ on Prime. I'm going to give it time - while it didn't seem to be too groundbreaking, it's got signs of promise, and hopefully it's a grower.

The Red Dwarf comparison is a bit obvious; it's sci fi, and that's about it for similarity. The humour is a lot more subtle than the in-yer-face satire of Red Dwarf, although there's the odd bout of silliness. I'd actually put it more towards the bizarre, discomforting strangeness of League of Gentlemen.

Great idea though: a weary, dysfunctional crew of government lackeys charged with exporting Britishness to the galaxy.

And the bloke out of Shaun of the Dead - can't remember his handle, Simon Pegg's offsider - is brilliant, besides having extremely comical jug-like ears.

I've noticed that the best British stars tend to have big ears or big noses.

"Great idea though: a weary, dysfunctional crew of government lackeys charged with exporting Britishness to the galaxy."

Remove the "of government lackeys" part and you have the central idea of Doctor Who.

Or both. Come on down Rowan Atkinson.

Plus Rowan has a great mole and weird red lips, which makes him even cooler (and I'm not being sarcastic, really).

The first episode tommorow Wednesday June 27 comes third place in TV WEEK's highlights of the day.

The reviewer made comparison between Hyperdrive and Doctor Who. He described Doctor Who as being polished while Hyperdrive being irritating.

Who was the reviewer? Perhaps someone who treats anything tagged with the dreaded sci fi label with disdain? The only comparison between Dr Who and Hyperdrive that holds is they're sci fi; that's it. It's a lazy link.
Saw another episode of Hyperdrive last night, and it's just getting better and better - it really skewers all those well-worn cliches and safe archetypes you'll recognise from Star Wars, Star Trek, etc etc. The Instadrunk pill is a highlight.

The third highlight of the day is described as 'irritating'? That says a lot about the quality of TV today! (Or TV Week...)

All I remember is that his initials are DK and I don't think he dislikes sci fi in general as he is given Pick of the Day in the past for Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride, Torchwood: Everything Changes and some episodes of Primeval.

In fairness to the reviewer I remember now (as I had a browse through that issue of TV WEEK last week) that he also says that it is probably unfair to judge Hyperdrive from the first episode alone.

Well we find out tonight.

I watched the first ep tonight. It was ok, nothing brilliant though. I might tune in next week.

Do. It takes a few episodes to kick into gear. It has made me hanker for the classic days of Red Dwarf, though; before it jumped the shark around series 7 it had some of the best lines in British comedy.

I'll take your word for it and check it out then. What I've seen of Red Dwarf (which, admittedly, isn't a lot) I've quite enjoyed so I'll hang in there.

A Gift from the Glish:
Not terribly bad opener to the series.
The Glish are the hideous aliens I have ever seen.
Will be watching more of this series.

I watched Hyperdrive. I hadn't seen any advanced info on the show, reviews opinions or suchlike apart from the ABC ad for it a couple of times.

Very disappointing. Any reference to Red Dwarf must mean the U.S. pilot. I didn't notice any American accents, but surely this was a US Network's opinion of how British comedy from the 1970's should be done.

The acting was stiff and wooden, clunky, poorly paced, too much self conscious "look at me, I'm being a nerd, aren't I funny!" smirking humour.

The character with the beard was the only actor I thought has any future, and what was that navigator/pilot/dancer supposed to be doing?

I'll give it a couple of weeks, if it doesn't pick up, I'll go back to sorting my shoes.

You are very kind. I didn't even give it a whole episode, and I believe I gave it more than it deserved.

I work on the theory that some of the best shows on TV have started off slowly and gone on to be fantastic.

Admittedly, this one doesn't need so much to change gear as to go into Hyperdrive (pun intended), but you never know.
