"Sci Fi gives 'Wizard of Oz' drama revamp
Wednesday, November 22 2006, 10:57 UTC - by James Welsh

Sci Fi Channel in America has unveiled plans to remake The Wizard of Oz into an edgy science fiction drama titled Tin Man.

Variety reports that the channel will spend close to $20m to make a six-hour miniseries scheduled to air next December.

"Our goal is to take Wizard of Oz to the next level and make it relevant, modern and fresh to a new generation," Sci Fi's general manager Dave Howe told the trade magazine.

In the revamped version, Dorothy will be a young woman called "DG" and will be hurled into a mysterious "Outer Zone" where she will meet other "reimagined" characters from the original."

Sounds like a typically bad idea from some over paid "network executive". Hopefully it's circling the drain as I type .....

Sounds stupid to me. The musical "The Wiz" was meant to update it to deal with issues like drugs. Has anyone here heard of it? I only do coz I learnt about musicals in Music this year.

Yep I seen The Wiz a couple of years ago as it was part of my research for an essay.

I liked the "Tin Man" episode of STTNG back in the '90s I think.

Saw all three episodes of Tin Man last night.

Very enjoyable. Worth the wait.

Despite having read that it was a revamp of The Wizard of Oz, this felt more like a sequel to it set generations later.

Very dark but also very good.

Tin Man will finally be shown on Australian TV on 7.

Although a three parter, 7 will instead show it in two nights at 8:30pm on December 26 and 27.

It's definitely a sequel -- it couldn't be anything else given the appearance of you know who.

Personally I'd rather see them do a propper adaption of Wicked, but it was kinda sorta okay I guess.
