| It's not really a reference as such. More of a coincidence (or perhaps not LOL)..but in Series 8 of Red Dwarf there is an episode called "Cassandra" and it is about the Dwarfies going down to an abandoned ship and meeting up with this ship's hologramtic on board computer called Cassandra. The similaries are so that almost thought that she was played by the same actress, Zoe Wanamaker, who played (or at least voiced) "Cassandra" in Doctor Who. They sound so alike and they have the same name. But it's Geradine McEwan in Red Dwarf. This episode was also filmed before Dr Who too (1999). But more a coicindence really. The characterisation is so similar. |

On www.yourtv.com just now, I saw a link to a slideshow of "TV's Hottest Geeks". Getting a feeling in me waters, I clicked it, and sure enough:
http://www.yourtv.com.au/slideshow/?site_section_id=681&start=8&action=view
| Quote: | The Doctor, Doctor Who
Played by: David Tennant
Why he's so hot: The Doctor is an alien scientist who gets around in funky suits and a time-travelling police box, using his vast intellect to battle evil robots and other bad guys. Doesn't sound too hot, but he pulls it all off with a sexy dose of wit and touches of romance with his female "companions". In fairness, there have been 10 different Doctors over the years, but Tennant's current incarnation is far dishier than Tom Baker and his crazy scarves ever were.
Hotness rating: Hotter than getting burned by a Dalek's laser death ray. "EX-TER-MI-NATE!" |

Don't know if you've seen this around, but I was at the Canberra Labor Club for dinner tonight and on the bar was a glass tibe, lit from within with a flow of bubbles - and a hand holding a bottle of Toohey's Extra Dry.
The image of it that I can find online doesn't have the hand is a container not much bigger than itself, but here's what I found:

I was on www.yourtv.com again, but this time I was completely surprised when I found this in the slideshow of "Spin-off hits and misses":
http://www.yourtv.com.au/slideshow/?site_section_id=742&start=3&action=view
| Quote: | Torchwood (2006 to present)
Spun-off from: The new incarnation of Doctor Who (2005 to present), which follows time-travelling alien who saves the universe on a weekly basis.
Hit or Miss? Hit. Torchwood was born out of Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies' desire to produce a sexed-up version of the sci-fi classic. Though the ridiculous adventures of bisexual leading man Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) have been scorned by some, the series has earned award nods and will return for a third season.
Factoid: Torchwood claims a number of firsts for the Doctor Who franchise, such as sex scenes, same-sex kisses and colourful language. |
Nice to see that they think of it as a hit, even though Channel Ten would disagree. |

Yeah I was thinking that too. I suppose the difference is that Jack is the one who kissed the Doctor, who just stood there. So Torchwood at least claims the first mutual same-sex kiss. |

I'd also dispute "colourful language". There were definitely instances of swearing in the old series...
...just not in English. |

| Switching over to The Closer last night, my brother and I were both pretty sure we heard mention of a Gwen Cooper. |

I wonder how I managed to miss that one.... I am up to those eps in my box set now, so will be watching out for it now.
Captain Jack and The Doctor had a bit of humourous innuendo going in Boom Town (Series 1)..."As long as you buy me a drink first" says that Doctor to Captain Jack.... |

| *SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR XMAS SPECIAL* In the Spicks and Specks Christmas special A Very Specky Christmas last night, host Adam Hills said the show was being broadcast "live from 19th century England". Could this be a nod to this year's Doctor Who Christmas special? Probably not. But I immediately thought of it. |
